When is the best time to dive?

Sodwana Bay's reefs can be dived all year in warm water. On Aliwal Shoal, ragged-tooth sharks gather roughly from June to November, and the sardine run passes the KwaZulu-Natal coast in winter, usually around June and July.

How large are the groups, and what certification do I need?

Every expedition is private to your own party. Tell us your certification level and experience, and we plan each site around it; deeper dives such as Protea Banks suit advanced divers.

Each expedition is quoted individually after a consultation and inclusions are confirmed in writing. Dive planning, accommodation and transfers from Durban or Richards Bay can all be built in.

Sodwana Bay

South Africa's premier tropical diving destination, protected within the UNESCO iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Marine National Park. The warm Mozambique Current nurtures Africa's southernmost coral reefs (a unique phenomenon on this coastline) hosting over 1,200 species of fish and five species of turtles. Crystal-clear waters, pristine reefs ranging from 9 to 100 meters, and the famous coelacanth habitat represent marine biodiversity found nowhere else. Aliwal Shoal

A world-renowned dive site within the Aliwal Marine Protected Area and part of South Africa's UNESCO World Heritage coastline. This fossilized sandstone reef off Umkomaas teems with life unique to the East Coast's convergence zone, where warm Mozambique currents meet cooler waters. Encounter ragged-tooth sharks in cathedral-like caves, witness the legendary sardine run, and explore dramatic drop-offs adorned with colorful soft corals. Protea Banks

Venture into one of the world's most thrilling shark dives, lying within South Africa's protected marine sanctuary network. This deep reef system, 8km offshore from Shelly Beach, is renowned for extraordinary aggregations of bull sharks, tiger sharks, and ragged-tooth sharks (a concentration made possible by the East Coast's unique marine ecosystem). Drift along the ledge at 27-30 meters as these apex predators patrol their domain.
